JULY 2010

Rugby – Southern Skies Tournament – Brisbane – Steve Marshall reports

During the July holidays I had the privilege of taking 22 rugby players from our college to Brisbane to compete in the Southern Skies Tournament.

The boys played four games the first two days, had a rest day (at Dreamworld), then three more games over the last two days. On grounds that were like concrete, in temperatures that were more like our summer temperatures and against teams that play at the highest level in their regions, our team found it hard going but certainly didn't disgrace themselves. Three boys in particular need to be acknowledged for making the All Stars Tournament team:

Jack Staniland, Beau Wedlock and Pierre van Heerden

The evening entertainment was well organised with cultural concerts, a dance party, shopping and sightseeing.

Throughout the entire week the boys were great ambassadors for our school (and in fact New Zealand) and should be proud of the way they conducted themselves. As mentioned above it really was a privilege to take the team to the tournament.

Paraparaumu College Inline Hockey 2010  -  Team Manager’s report by Debbie Joyce

For the fourth consecutive year the College sent a team to the NZ National Secondary School Inline Hockey Champs. Hosted by New Plymouth Boys High School, the event was held at the Ravens Inline Hockey Club’s rink at East End, New Plymouth over the weekend July 3-5 2010. The team comprised:

Carl Joyce (Capt), Todd Moore-Jones, Ryan Galland, Cameron Speirs, Freya Try (Goalie), Robert Hockey, Lucy Nelson

Typically an inline hockey side has a minimum of 9 players (2 lines of 4 players plus a goalie) so we knew that with such a small team we would always struggle against the large strong teams fielded by some colleges. This proved to be the case, made even harder by an injury to one of our players and a broken wheel to another player’s skate midway through the game against the top team from Keri Keri High School (defending champions).

The team finished 6th overall (in 2009 we were 4th which was our best ever placing). Despite the slide in the standings the team thoroughly enjoyed the three hard days of solid games. Paradoxically the team’s two best performances (one draw and one narrow loss) were against the teams which, respectively, placed third and first overall.

The team enjoyed huge parental support and socially the trip was highly successful. This may have been the last time the College fields a team in the Championship Division as owing to diminishing player numbers we may need to combine with another college next year and compete in the Combined Teams Division.

Total games played: 10 (Won 2, Drew 1, Lost  7)

Individual Successes

The following Paraparaumu College students from the “Kapiti Rangers” (Kapiti Inline Hockey Club), have been selected for Lower North Island rep teams to compete at the 2010 NZ Interregional Championships in New Plymouth at Labour Weekend.

Carl Joyce               Under 16s

Ryan Galland           Under 16s

Squash

During June this year Paris Dalrymple-Mortleman travelled overseas to compete in two Squash competitions.

The first competition was the Penang Junior Open where Paris finished as 11th seed out of 32 competitors.

The second competition was the Milo All Star Championship held in Kuala Lumpar.  Going into this competition Paris was seeded 18th.  She was the eventual winner of the Plate Event U15 Champion and ended up 5th seed out of 32.

Well done Paris!

Junior Hospitality Challenge

On Friday 4th June 8 students competed at the Junior Hospitality Challenge at WELTEC in Petone. Paraparaumu College came out with some excellent results.

  • Ben Johnson won a silver medal for his Thai Larb in the Pork Mince category and he also was runner up to the top chef of the day winning a new French Knife

  • Aaron McGoldrick won bronze in the pork mince category with his Grilled Eggplant and Capsicum Lasagna

  • Jordan Southcombe and Matt Meredith won silver in the team event. A new achievement for the school in this class. They made four portions of an entrιe and a main – Roasted Tomato Tarts with Feta and Pesto and Pork Saltimbocca with a Red Wine Reduction on a Pea and Feta Crush, Roasted Zucchini and Parsley Mash.

  • Max Goodman won bronze in the Innovative Omelette class with his Smoked Chicken and Avocado Cream Rolled Omelette.

We also had entries in the Pasta class (Geoff Sciascia and Simon Kruidenier), Fruit Flan (Amanda Alnek-Forster) and Quiche (Hayden Keehan).

All students worked extremely hard on perfecting their dishes and I was extremely proud of them on the day. The standard had lifted from previous years and it was nice to see our students reaching and exceeding this standard. It is so rewarding taking students away to compete in a competition where they are so passionate about what they are doing.

Volleyball

Congratulations to Justin Strik on his selection to the North Island Secondary Schools Volleyball team.  The team will be taking part in the Trans-Tasman Volleyball tournament to be held in Napier in June.

NZCT CRICKET CUP AREA FINAL

This is a national secondary schools knockout tournament for Year 9/10 boys played from October to March on a grass wicket over 40 overs.

The area final, played in Levin, saw our boys come up against Horowhenua College.  Horowhenua won the toss and elected to field.

The boys had a great innings finishing 235/7.

Horowhenua were unable to respond to some great bowling being all out for 134 in 34.4 overs.

Next up!  Wanganui Collegiate.

WELLINGTON SAILORS 1st and 4th

L to R: Helm: Josh Porebski, Main: Adam Middleton, Trim: Janey Goedhart, Bow: Christie OsbourneAn excellent result for Wellington youth sailors in the National Bank International Youth Match Racing Regatta just completed in Auckland!

As well as winning the event, a crew from the under 21 development squad, including Kapiti Boating Club members and Paraparaumu College students Christie Osborne and Janey Goedhart, finished 4th in the championship, sailed in Auckland from the 17-21 February. The event had three teams from Australia, one from each of Hong Kong, Caledonia, and the USA, plus three teams from Auckland’s youth scheme and two from Wellington’s Port Nicholson Yachting Trust’s Youth Scheme.

The event is contested in Elliot 6 meter keelboats, crewed by either three of four crew members.  Wellington’s Josh Junior, Matthew Stevens and Chris Jones won the regatta for the second time running, but gaining 4th place with a newly formed crew was an added bonus for the Wellington sailors. The crew with the Paraparaumu sailors were consistent throughout the regatta, with their only losses in twenty two races being to the top three boats.

Osborne and Goedhart are both in the Under 21 and Women's Match Racing  Squad, a training scheme run as part of the very successful Port Nicholson Yachting Trust’s Youth Scheme. Their training schedule increased with the lead up to this regatta and the extra time on the water has been rewarded. The squad’s boats are a regular sight training on Wellington’s harbour on Sundays.

National Beach Volleyball Secondary Schools Championships

Sixteen students represented the college at the National Beach Volleyball Secondary Schools Championships over the weekend of 13th and 14th February.

Iain Charlton and Justin Strik played together as a team in the Senior Boys division, as did Matt Meredith and Luke Purcell.  Both teams played strong throughout the weekend, working on improving their communication skills and playing smart to find the opponents “holes” on the court.  At the time of printing, we do not have confirmed places for these teams.

Francie Graham and Vanessa Holmes played in the Senior Girls division and found real strength during the weekend as a team.  They won many points from simply playing faster and smarter than their opposition.  Francie also earned several points from fantastic serving which many teams could not return.  Francie and Vanessa were awarded 11th place in New Zealand.

Jade Candy and Amelia Vinnell also played against Senior Girls teams from all over the country.   Overall, Jade and Amelia finished 9th in the competition, which ranks them 9th in New Zealand for Senior Girls Beach Volleyball.

In the Junior Divisions, we had 2 boys’ teams and 2 girls’ teams. Matt Fowler and Sam Sarcich played together, as did Zac Millar and Gareth Rogers. Both teams made a strong debut at the competition with several wins to earn them 10th and 12th places respectively. A highlight of the weekend was when the two boys’ teams had to play each other to advance to 9th or 10th position, or move to play off for 11th and 12th. The intensity of that game, along with the exuberance from all the parents in the crowd helped the boys play at their best.

Jacinta Beckley and Danielle Heffey played in the Junior girls division along with Jordyn Pfeiler and Carissa Schreiber. At the time of printing, we do not have confirmed places for these teams.

A fantastic effort from all players and a big thanks to Mr Graham, Mrs Sarcich, Emma Luxton, Joel and Linda Weijers and Mrs Lorcet for supporting and coaching the players over the weekend.

Mitchell toured with his Wellington ITF squad.

With no expectation in winning a game Mitchell has some impressive results, making the top 16 players in both tournaments and receiving a worthy write up from NZ Tennis.  He also achieved a much sort after World Junior Ranking of 1495!

Also at the end of the holidays Mitchell took part in the Manawatu Senior Open making the consolation final and making the semi-final in the doubles.

Sports Exchange

The second exchange with Newcastle-Under-Lyme School from the West Midlands in England was three games of netball.  The weather on the day was atrocious with the games having to be moved inside to the gym.

Our 9A Netball team played the visitors Under 15 team.  Both teams were very evenly matched with the score drawn at 18 a piece at three quarter time.  In the last quarter 9A pulled away with a great victory with a final score 27 – 19.

The 10A Netball team played the visitors Under 16 team.  Both teams took a while to get into a rhythm and again, the teams were quite evenly matched.  10A eventually came away with a 17 – 15 win.

Senior B took on the Under 17 team.  The first two quarters saw Senior B power ahead to a great lead.  The Under 17’s came back a little once they had found their feet but Senior B consolidated and ended up winning 33 – 12.

A great display of netball from all teams with excellent sportsmanship from both schools.

The third exchange with Whitgift School from Croydon, Surrey, England was two games of rugby.  This took place in sunshine and warmer conditions that we have been used to of late.

Our U65 kg team was first up playing Whitgift’s Under 15 team.  A very even match up to half time, with the boot of James Bailey in use for a few penalties and conversions. The U65’s came away with a 26 – 16 win.

Our 1st XV were up against Whitgifts 1st XV who were a very strong and physical side.  Whitgifts dominance was evident from the outset but our boys kept plugging away and did themselves proud.  The final score was 50 – 8 to Whitgift.

Again, some excellent sporting prowess was on show with all teams giving their best.
