Paraparaumu College Safe School Information
Paraparaumu College makes every endeavour to make the school a safe place for the school community; this includes students, staff, parents, visitors, coaches and others.
Everyone in the school community can contribute to this by ensuring bullying is stopped when it happens and any bullying is reported to the College as soon after it occurs as possible. All reports of bullying will be taken seriously and dealt with as soon as is practicable.
The following are the processes for reporting bullying of students by students and for parents to report bullying incidents.
Bullying by students towards students
NB It is expected that students found responsible for bullying will in the first instance be given a warning with information about future consequences should they be involved in future bullying incidents.
Parents or members of the College community reporting bullying are encouraged to ring the College and speak to a Dean in the first instance. Serious incidents may be passed onto the Senior Management Team.

Recipe Book Project
2010
Paraparaumu College Students from many different subjects have started work on an exciting new integrated project - creating a recipe book and we would love for you to be involved!
Our recipe book is divided into the following sections: SUMMER, AUTUMN, WINTER AND SPRING . It has a sustainable, community feel with an emphasis on seasonal produce and recipes with a Kiwiana theme. Photos, gardening and household tips will also fill the book. It will be for sale in Term 4 and will make a wonderful Christmas gift. All profit will be donated to Ronald McDonald House to help them build their new 34 room house in Newtown, Wellington.
We need your help!
Many more recipes are needed…
Do you want your name and recipe printed in our book?
We are collecting recipes that fulfill one or more of the following criteria:
· Fits into one of our seasonal sections
· Is a Kiwi favourite
· Is great for young cooks
· Is from another culture but has been adapted to suit NZ climate and ingredients
The intention is that for every published recipe a BLURB will accompany it. Therefore, could you also provide with the recipe a few sentences that explains perhaps where the recipe came from, why it is a family favourite and what adaptations you have or could make etc.

INFLUENZA A (H1N1) Swine Flu - information for educational institutions - Ministry of Education guidance
If your child is sick with flu symptoms keep them at home and contact your local doctor or health centre or call Healthline on 0800 611 116
If your child is being kept at home, for whatever reason, you must inform the school immediately
Hygiene is the most important step in preventing the spread of influenza. Washing hands thoroughly, for at least 20 seconds with soap and drying hands well, or using an alcohol-based rub, are the best ways to protect yourself from the spread of germs. Keep coughs and sneezes covered and dispose of tissues in a covered, lined rubbish bin. Try to stay a metre away from sick people

PARENTS: A PARAPARAUMU COLLEGE PERSON
We want to have your input in deciding what “values” you would like to see being adopted by the College. The idea is that these five or so ideals will be recognised, published, promoted and acted upon by all associated with us. We see them as being a guide to learning and behaviour.
The staff have already participated in selecting five / six “values” as have seniors at the leadership camp 2008, Year 9 students, (as a Form class exercise ), and two of the Year 13 Health classes. It is now your turn as parents to have your say and we would really appreciate your input. The final list will be published in the school newsletter
Below are some of the words used by the groups thus far involved. You might think of others. Please take some time to circle the 5/6 words you feel are the most important or you feel would reflect;

Tax credits for thousands of families
85,000 New Zealand families were newly entitled to family assistance tax credits from 1 April 2006.
Changes to Family Assistance as part of the Working for Families package means that almost all working families earning under $70,000 a year were able to receive family assistance since April 2006. Many working families earning between $70,000 and $100,000 a year and some larger working families earning more are also eligible.
“Families who weren’t previously eligible may now find that they are and people will also be able to earn more before payments start to reduce,” says Vaughan Crouch, National Manager (Social Assistance), Inland Revenue.
“The changes will make a big difference for many families. For example, before April 2006 a family earning $45,000 per year with two young children received $46 per fortnight from Family Assistance. From April 2006 it increased to $280. A family earning $60,000 per year with two young children was not eligible for Family Assistance but since April 2006 they receive $164 per fortnight,” says Vaughan.
Anyone who thinks they may qualify for Family Assistance can go online to www.workingforfamilies.govt.nz or find out if they qualify by calling 0800 257 477.
People may also be eligible for other Working for Families entitlements. This includes Childcare Assistance and the Accommodation Supplement from Work and Income. For more information visit the Working for Families website, or call 0800 774 004.
The changes are part of Working for Families, a package designed to make it easier for people to work and raise a family.
TEXT BULLYING
Text and electronic bullying have been highlighted in the media recently.
If you or your children are concerned about any form of bullying please contact the relevant level dean or a senior member of staff so that we can address the issue.
Very useful information relating to text bullying to help students and parents can be found on the Internet Safety Group Netsafe's website www.netsafe.org.nz. They suggest the following strategies:
Be very careful about who you give your number to - and don't give out other people's numbers without asking them first
Don't reply to texts from someone you don't know
Don't reply to a bullying message
Be careful about the language you use in texts, always think how you might feel if you receive such a message yourself.
Mobile phone companies will act when abusive text messages are received
Telecom: Call them on *123 or phone the call investigation centre 0800 809 806
Vodafone: Call them free on 777 with the message details.
The College WILL NOT accept bullying of any kind and we aim to create a safe environment for all.
