School Bus information for Waikanae students
We have been advised by Usabus that some students are catching Route 290, wanting to connect to the school buses at Waikanae but not making it on time as they are catching the 290 at the wrong time.
To make their connection to the school bus, students should catch the following service as the stated time:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday
- Departs Waikanae @ 7:08am
Thursday
- Departs Waikanae @ 7:58am
Both of the above 290 services will connect with the school buses.
Safety concern for pedestrians crossing Waikanae Bridge
We have received communication from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency regarding safety concerns for pedestrians crossing the Waikanae bridge during the construction of the clip on. This work is due to be completed in June.
In the past few weeks since construction started, the on-site temporary traffic management staff reported there have been a number of pedestrians crossing the bridge (mostly to access the swim hole under the rail bridge) by walking/running on the narrow ledge next to live traffic. There are ’No pedestrian access’ signs on the bridge ends, however the signs are ignored and people take their chance by dashing across the bridge. This is a serious safety concern, and we have been asked to advise our community to adhere to the signs.
Waka Kotahi has advised that if there are groups of students that want to cross without using the detour, and before they may decide to dash across the bridge, to please signal the traffic management site staff and ask to cross the bridge. Site staff will stop traffic so that pedestrians can cross safely. Note that this will not be allowed during peak times, and there may be a waiting time of up to 15 minutes to cross.
As traffic will need to be stopped every time pedestrians are allowed to cross, this will have a significant impact on the traffic performance across Waikanae bridge. If this arrangement severely impacts on traffic at Waikanae bridge, the impact will be reviewed and this arrangement may be withdrawn. Note that the default pedestrian access is still via the pedestrian detour and should be considered first.
