Kia ora koutou
We are sending this newsletter early this week before heading into my final couple of days and farewells. I think it’s a sensible decision to try and pen my final thoughts now rather than over my last day or so of term.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Paraparaumu College, since moving here mid 2018. It has been an absolute privilege to lead this college. We are so fortunate here to have such incredible staff and wonderful students. We are also fortunate to have such great support from our community and this shows itself in so many ways, I want to thank you for that.
I have has so many highlights, but as I said to students in recent assemblies the times I have experienced the greatest joy is seeing the students do the things they love doing - whether that be performing on a stage, creating an amazing wearable arts piece, playing the sports they love, performing kapa haka, demonstrating their leadership or celebrating their learning and achievements.
Mā te huruhuru, ka rere te manu
Adorn the bird with feathers to enable it to fly
This whakatauki is special and one I've used at each pōwhiri for our new students.
I have loved seeing our students grow their feathers and with the support of many, flying and soaring. That is an immense privilege.
Individual moments for me are numerous, but most recently my opportunity to enjoy a four day Gold Duke of Edinburgh tramp over the Tararua Ranges Ōtaki to Kaitoke affirmed for me, yet again, how great it is to work with young people. It wasn’t an easy tramp but the experience was amazing - the views, the banter, the laughs, the overcoming of challenges and the connecting. My cup gets filled through experiences like this.
As I said in last week’s newsletter, the college is in a great place, the teaching and learning initiatives we have been collectively working on have strengthened where we are as a college and our NCEA results from 2023 are a great endorsement of what we’ve been doing.
This great work will continue, as the secret to the success of PC lies in the broader leadership, the passion and quality of our staff, the commitment to learning and success of the students and the support of the community.
When I arrived at PC I was made to feel immediately welcomed. Please look out for Mark as he takes over as Principal. Sidle up and have a chat, invite him along to things, please help him feel welcomed into this school community - he’s going to be a great principal.
In closing, thank you for your support of myself and the college over the years. I love this school and this community and Kath and I will continue to call Kāpiti home. However, our next adventure is 7 months in The States. We move to Philadelphia in July as Kath has received a Fulbright scholarship and will be working with a team at Drexel University looking at ways to enhance work integrated learning experiences for neurodiverse learners. We will return back here in January 2025, ready for a new year and new opportunities.
