Uniform Update

The vast majority of our students wear the College uniform well and I would like to thank all our parents and caregivers for your support in ensuring they leave home each morning in the correct uniform. We take pride in the way our students look and it is our expectation that they wear the correct school uniform each day they come to school. Unfortunately we are seeing several non-regulation uniform items creeping in, especially as the weather has been colder recently, and we would therefore like to send out a reminder of what is acceptable, as well as what is not. This follows a Board discussion around uniform recently and as a result of that I would like to reiterate the following main points:

  • If you are unsure about any of our uniform expectations please visit our website using this link: https://www.paraparaumucollege.school.nz/join-us/uniform-appearance
  • We will now allow students to wear either the College jacket which is available from our uniform shop, or any plain black jacket such as a Kathmandu / Macpac puffer jacket or similar. This includes a vest or gilet if preferred. Students will usually be asked to remove outdoor jackets when they are in class.
  • Hoodies are not part of school uniform at this stage and they must not be worn whilst at College. This includes wearing them underneath outdoor coats or jackets as an alternative to the correct school shirt and jersey. Some extra-curricular activities have provided the option of buying a hoodie to support a school team, arts or cultural event. Please note that these are not a part of day to day school uniform, although we may allow students to wear them for a fixed period to promote or celebrate their involvement. This will be made clear to students when these opportunities arise.

We will be reminding students next week of any items that are not part of uniform with a view to getting everyone in complete full school uniform from Tuesday 25 June (this is because we have you-niform days on Friday 21 and Monday 24 June - more details below). Thank you in advance for all your support with this.

Finally, the Board has decided that at the same time as tidying up our current uniform, we will be undertaking a full uniform review to ensure that it remains appropriate for the current education environment and for the College’s diverse student body. We will also be looking to ensure that additional items such as hoodies for extra-curricular activities are consistent in terms of their look and feel, including College branding. The uniform review will commence in Term 3 this year and it will take the form of a full school community consultation to ensure we hear from as many people as possible. Any changes to our uniform will not come into effect until 2026 and there will be a phased approach that will see any new uniform items implemented as new students enrol each year from 2026 onwards.

Pride Week and You-niform days on Friday 21 and Monday 24 June

Next week is Pride Week across Aotearoa. The purpose of this week is to make queer people more visible, and help them to feel supported by the community. We want to make sure that our school is a welcoming place for all rangatahi, so they feel that they can express their true selves safely, and grow into the people that they want to be as young adults.

As part of Pride Week we will be holding a rainbow dress up and bake sale on Friday 21 June to raise funds for Rainbow Youth, who provide support, information, resources and advocacy for New Zealand’s queer, gender diverse, takatāpui and intersex youth.

Our Year 13 Food and Nutrition students have organised a second you-niform day on Monday 24 June. As part of their Level 3 Achievement Standard they investigated the problems caused by Food Poverty in New Zealand and have then formulated an action plan to give help locally. As part of this action plan we are asking all students to consider bringing a non perishable food item or can to school on the day or, if preferred, $2. This will all go towards helping the Kāpiti Food Bank.
