Kia ora koutou

As the school week draws to a close, so does my time as Acting Principal.  Mark Robinson will return from bereavement leave in the UK from Monday 17 March.  I am always amazed at the many and varied questions that get asked of a college principal, the discussions that are had and the opportunities to be involved with our students that happen in ‘a day in the life of a principal’.  I enjoyed accompanying some of our student leaders to an International Womans day seminar at Victoria University last Friday.  Observing 50 confident, positive, engaged young people from many Wellington Colleges connecting with each other, taking in the words of the presenters and contributing to the discussions that followed was personally energising and a highlight of my week.  Our students finished their post on the student leaders Instagram page with this statement summarising their reflections of the event: Surrounded by inspiring young women, we left feeling empowered, motivated and more certain than ever that our voices matter.

Blood Drive

It was great to see so many students sign up to our Blood Drive that took place on Wednesday.  We hope that they continue to donate as they go through their adult lives as it is such an important service.

Phones - PC Phone Procedure - Away every day!

Earlier this week we spoke to students in their Tūhono classes about phone use expectations.

We are all aware that phones are important but they’re also a huge distraction. Keeping them away helps our students stay focussed, respect others, and get the most out of their learning. To help keep our classrooms focused and fair for everyone, here’s what we have let our students know about phone use at PC:

Be proactive – Keep your phone away to show respect (Mana Motuhake).

If you are asked to put your phone away – It will be recorded on KAMAR. No contact home at this stage, but repeated incidents will be tracked.

If you refuse or take it out again – This may be considered defiance, and further action will follow, including home contact and possible referral to Deans or HODs.

Uniform

As the weather begins to get colder students are moving into the warmer items of school uniform.  As a reminder, there are no black pants that are regulation uniform.  Our school pants are blue and can be purchased from the uniform shop.  Students who wear black pants to school will be given loan uniform by the deans until they can sort out regulation uniform.  Hoodies are also not a part of our school uniform, so please ensure you familiarise yourself with the warmer items of uniform via our website.  Sandals are still a popular item to wear, with or without socks, however, they should be black, not brown or white. Your assistance with having our students in regulation uniform is appreciated.

NCEA Information Evening for Parents

On Thursday 27 March an NCEA information evening for parents will be held in the College staffroom from 5.30 until 6.30. This is an opportunity to learn a bit more about how NCEA works (including literacy and numeracy corequisite assessments) and to ask any questions that you may have.

Chromebooks

We continue to have many students coming to school either without their Chromebook, or with a Chromebook that's not charged.  We have a very limited supply of chargers and Chromebooks available.  Please encourage your students to bring their Chromebook fully charged to school every day.  Thanks for your help with this.

Host Families

We are always on the lookout for host families for our international students and are now seeing families who may be keen to host from Term 3 this year. It can be a very rewarding experience.

If you would be keen to find out more, please email international@pc.school.nz and Shirley Hynes, Homestay Coordinator will get back to you.
