Kia ora koutou

We start this week’s Weekly Wrap with a video, where I talk with Riley and Kristin about their recent trip to Ngā Manu Nature Reserve. They were amongst a group of 10 budding ecologists who spent a few days in the holidays working with conservationists to learn more about the preservation of our local flora and fauna.

Big Sing

Many congratulations to conductor Liselle Hutchinson and the 17 students who participated in the Big Sing at the Michael Fowler Centre this week. I was lucky enough to get down to Wellington during Wednesday to see them sing and they were superb. It is exciting to see both our Barbershop and Choral ensembles doing well on the big stage and there is a real joy in singing which I have personally benefited from as a musician over many years. I look forward to hearing more from them in the upcoming Arts Extravaganza, which takes place on 17 and 18 June.

SGCNZ Shakespeare National Competition

We had a group of students attend the SGCNZ Shakespeare National Competition over Kings Birthday Weekend.

On Friday, 22 students attended various workshops which were thoroughly enjoyed and lots of learning was taken away from them!

On Saturday, our Merchant of Venice cast of 8 performed at the St James Theatre and had a fantastic time showcasing all the hard work they had put into this student directed piece.

Congratulations to Piper-Jean who was recognised for her Static Image which is another competition that runs alongside the performances.

It was an awesome weekend for all involved and always a highlight in the Arts calendar at PC!

Toilet Blocks

You may recall that the Board approved the installation of CCTV monitoring in the communal areas of our block bathrooms last year. This was in response to concerns at the time about groups of students gathering in bathrooms and, occasionally, engaging in anti-social behaviour. I am pleased to report that, on the whole, there has been significant improvement.

However, we are noticing that some groups are starting to gather in bathrooms again, especially as the weather is getting colder. In addition, we have become aware that students are sometimes going into cubicles two or more at a time, both in the single cell toilets and in the block toilets. I can only assume that this is for phone use or vaping.

We will be reiterating to all students next week that toilet cubicles are strictly one student at a time, and if multiple students are caught together we will be contacting home and putting consequences in place. We will also be reminding them that there is no reason to gather or loiter in the communal spaces in block toilets. Your support in reinforcing these messages would be greatly appreciated. We will also be reminding students that there are classrooms available at interval and lunchtimes that can be accessed by anyone who has proven they can use them respectfully. In addition, the library and gym always have a range of fun activities to keep students occupied.

Pride Week

This week we have had a wonderful pride week full of celebration!

We had some rainbow quizzes and painting in the library on Wednesday, during which we also had journalists come in to write about the celebrations and interview some students. We had a great turnout on Thursday for some "Just Dance" routines in the auditorium. And finally on Friday it was amazing to see all the staff and students dress up in colourful outfits to help raise money for Inside Out. We also had great success with the rainbow bake sale which happened at lunchtime today.

NZ Art Show - Hyundai Emerging Artist Awards

We had three students submit work for the NZ Art Show - Hyundai Emerging Artist Award which took place last weekend, Charlie Dale-Low, Rosa Topliff and Georgia Fisher.

We are delighted to announce that Charlie was the premier award winner with his acrylic work “Untitled”.  The judges artists Lynne Sandri and Milarky stated that it showed confident and resolved brushwork, excellent use of acrylic paint medium both in application and choice of colours and a well-considered composition.

Rosa’s acrylic work also “Untitled” gained a Merit Award.

With 43 artworks from 15 schools, the exhibition was compelling, vibrant, and full of promise. It generated a lot of interest, and a number of artworks were sold with Charlie’s being one of them.

We use our School App and Facebook page for any urgent messages and to highlight student success and we would love you to follow us.  You can find the links at the bottom of this newsletter along with a link to our Instagram page and Youtube.
