I want to start by thanking all those parents and caregivers who participated in parent / teacher interviews either via digital means this week, or in person last Thursday. The key to achieving the very best outcomes in school is for the 3 way partnership between students, teachers and parents / caregivers to be strong and stable, and your support in your child’s learning journey is therefore essential. Thank you for taking the time to engage in these learning conversations, and I hope you found them valuable.
We have some staffing changes to inform you of in this newsletter, and I will start by saying farewell to Mr Jimmy Sheppard who has been appointed to a permanent PE position at Wellington College. Jimmy has been here for the year teaching primarily in the Outdoor Ed dept, and he has done a fantastic job. He was mainly filling a role vacated by Mr Jono Hicks who had taken leave for much of 2024, but the stars have aligned and Jono has decided to return early and therefore starts back with us on Monday 26 August! We wish Mr Sheppard well in his new role and we look forward to welcoming Mr Hicks back on Monday.
Our amazing Associate Principal, Mrs Andrea Stonehouse, is taking a well deserved break with a period of 7 weeks refreshment leave from Monday 26 August. Andrea will return at the beginning of Term 4 and we all wish her well as she sets out on her travels. Many thanks to Ms Anita Titter and Ms Mel Meikle who will step up and help oversee Year 9 in Andrea’s absence, and also to Ms Michelle Ferris who will take on Andrea’s EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) responsibilities.
I am constantly impressed by our fabulous students on a daily basis and this week I want to highlight 2 young people who have gone above and beyond to raise funds for other causes. Firstly, well done to Max White who has raised in excess of $1000 for Shave for a Cure, a national charity dedicated to supporting patients, and their families/whānau, living with a blood cancer or a serious blood condition. Max and his mum shaved their heads on Monday afternoon and I was lucky enough to be there to see the shave take place. Secondly, a huge congratulations to Year 12 student Katie Walker, who almost single handedly arranged a quiz event at the Jolly Pub this past Wednesday evening. Thanks to her efforts, more than $2000 has been raised in support of Breast Cancer New Zealand! Well done and a huge thank you to both Max and Katie for their selfless fundraising efforts.
